Out of the Box

Who Wrote the Cluesheet….of Love? January 30, 2011    10:08 pm

Flowers. Candy. Jewelry. Dinner and a movie. There’s a reason these have become the Valentine’s Day standard fare: who doesn’t like flowers and chocolate?

But the power of a Valentine’s Day gift isn’t just in communicating that you love your sweetheart or that you managed to remember the day. It can show your honey how you understand him or her. It’s acknowledgment that you want to experience the world together. That’s what makes your connection special.

Every Valentine’s Day, we plan a few Out of the Box Events for the

friends and lovers who are looking for day plans. This year, we’re running three different hunts, each with its own focus, but all supplying our Out of the Box Events brand of fun.

If you and your loved one feel like an active day in the sun might get those lovin’ endorphins going, we recommend the Venice Valentine’s Hunt on Feb. 12 and 13, at 11 a.m., noon, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Riding your bikes (rentals available) through Venice, you can search for the answers to our Venice Beach clues while feeling the wind in your hair, smelling the salt air, and getting your blood pumping. Afterward, get some food and drinks at Baja Cantina or the Sidwalk Cafe, both of which have partnered with Out of the Box Events for this year’s hunt. And rest easy in knowing that part of your $25 entry fee goes to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Would you rather chill out inside? Choose instead the Grammy Go Seek Hunt on Feb. 12 at the Grammy Museum. The clues will guide you through the museums exhibits, giving you some bits of history and wrapping you in music’s ineffable cool. There’s costumes, sheet music recordings and interactive exhibits — you’ll find yourself in an amazed state of sensory overload. Teams can be up to 6 people, so if you’re looking to gather friends for a fun weekend activity, this hunt’s a good gone.

The Chinatown Valentine’s Challenge on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. charges through one of Los Angeles’s most fascinating neighborhoods. Bring a digital camera for the photo questions and get creative with your shots. Photos bring us back to the place and time where we took them, so our photo questions are an invitation to make a memory – with your loved one, with your friends, on doing a one-armed self-portrait of a funny face. Top off your taste of local flavor with an early dinner and you have yourself the pefect date night – or a rowdy hang-out with friends.

We look forward to seeing your bright and beautiful faces on the hunting grounds. The best part of Valentine’s for us is meeting new friends, reuniting with our return customers, and seeing the smitten couples holding hands as they walk between clues. Last year, two of our participants got engaged on the beach after the Venice Valentine’s Hunt. The best part of a scavenger hunt is when you find what (or who!) you’re looking for.

LOVE TRIVIA

We love trivia, don’t you?

The word “love” is from the Sanskrit lubhyati, which means “desire.”

Engagement rings are often worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because the Greeks believed in the vena amouris, the “vein of love,” ran directly from that finger to the heart.

Four-leaf clovers are a symbol of good luck, but they were also part of an Irish love ritual. Some people believed that if a woman ate a four-leaf clover while thinking of a man she fancied, he would fall in love with her, too. Now…where can we get some four-leaf clovers, hmm?
