Go, Team! February 3, 2011    12:28 am

1933 East Carolina football team

The Super Bowl is just about here. Some of us are laying out our team jerseys, some of us are inviting friends over to watch the game, some of us are buying snacks. It’s exciting. Cheering together is such a powerful way of connecting. We might not be on the field, but we are, in our living rooms across the United States, pulling together as a team to root for our guys.

You can’t win a football game without teamwork. The players don’t play alone — alone they’re smashed, dented, beaten, done. But together, having learned each others’ strengths and weaknesses, having found and practiced ways to celebrate and compensate for each others’ traits, these teams find their way to the top of their sport, with millions of people watching. We the fans want to see a miracle — an impossible throw, a surprising reversal, a new record set. We want to watch as the sum of a team becomes greater than any single player, because as we cheer we become a part of that greatness, and because in our day-to-day lives we hope the same for ourselves. We want our families, our work crews, and our friend groups to prove better together than alone. So we watch football for the thrill, for the camaraderie, and for the chili, but we also watch for the lessons we’ll take into our lives.

In this spirit, we’ve compiled some of our favorite quotes from football, and we wish you a Happy Super Bowl Sunday. As always, we hope your team wins.
