You never know where you’re going to find your next clue to living the good life.
Case in point: we were checking our e-mails last week when one of our staff members sent an excited alert. He’d been catching up on USA Network’s “White Collar” when one of the show’s characters dropped a gem of wisdom into the scene:
“Life is more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party.”
Record scratch. Did philosopher-quoting con man Mozzie just quote Jimmy Buffett? Yes, yes he did.
Cue the music: tropical, fun-loving, witty. We all know and love Jimmy Buffett from backyard summertime barbecue iPod mixes and chilled-out open-air concerts. But wrapped up in his laid-back tunes are keen observations about living life to its fullest and having fun along the way.
Jimmy Buffett’s quote comes from his autobiography A Pirate Looks at Fifty. He’s been searching South America for a place to dock his boat, and he has been given the name of a guide in Tobago, Captain Frothy, plus a couple hints about a place where he might be able to land. He’s not sure how it’ll work out yet, “but searching is half the fun.”
Yes. We agree, Jimmy. The pleasure of life lies in figuring out how it’s going to work out. If we walked into every room, expecting people to have planned joy for us — a surprise party, all the time — then we don’t get the anticipation, the suspense, the participation in our own futures.
If we’re taking the clues we have in hand and enjoying the search, looking for our next victory, we’re living our life like a scavenger hunt. Each time we get a clue it is a surprise. And that’s when we get to throw our own little party!
Speaking of which, we’re ready for a party now. We’ve got a pitcher and ice, you bring the tequila. In other wise words from Jimmy Buffet, “When live gives you limes, make margaritas.”
Now if we only knew where we put our lost shaker of salt…
