This Monday, the United States will celebrate Presidents Day. We find ourselves steeped in traditions such as snoozing through the three-day weekend and hitting the stores for the best deals since Christmas. But in the midst of this fun, where are the Presidents?
Look no further. Our Out of the Box researchers decided to dig up a few interesting facts about Presidents Day and our past Commanders in Chief.
We also believe that this is a missed opportunity for fun theme parties. Who hasn’t wanted to don a powdered wig, a frock coat and knickers? Consider the options for President-inspired snacks: an Abraham Lincoln Cheese Log Cabin! William Howard Taft Taffy! Jimmy Carter Peanut Brittle! The possibilities are endless.
But we digress… Have fun this Presidents Day, however you choose to celebrate!
Presidential Trivia
Presidents Day was originally named “Washington’s Birthday,” after George Washington, whose birthday was Feb. 22. It was later expanded to include a celebration of Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday was Feb. 12, and “Presidents
Day” entered common parlance.
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President, 1861-1865, was the first President to wear a beard.
John Tyler, 10th President, 1841-1845, had the most children of any president, 15 in all.
James Garfield, 20th President, 1881-1881, could simultaneously write Latin with one hand and Ancient Greek with the other.
Grover Cleveland, 22nd President, 1885-1889, answered the phone himself when a call came into the White House. He is also the only President to be married in a ceremony at the White House.
“Teddy” bears were named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President 1901-1909, because he was a famed outdoorsman, hunter, and conservationist.
Barack Obama, 44th President, 2009-present, is the only President to have won a Grammy Award — and in fact, he’s won two. He won the Best Spoken Word Album in 2005 for “Dreams of My Father” and again in 2008 for “Audacity of Hope.”
