Erin Go Bragh! March 16, 2011    3:38 pm

Pasadena City Hall

Pasadena City Hall — so photogenic!

We started our St. Patrick’s Day early this year with our St. Paddy’s Told Town Treasure Hunt. Next up, we’ve got our corned beef and cabbage, we’re making McDonald’s runs to partake in their seasonal Shamrock Shake, and we’re peeking into clover patches, looking for four leaf clovers.

While preparing our Old Town hunt, we got to spend plenty of time immersed in Irish culture. Up to 40% of Americans claim some Irish heritage — though as we all know, on St. Paddy’s Day everyone gets to be Irish. Irish culture has informed American culture all the way along — which may explain why the United States of America has nine cities named Dublin — and four more named Shamrock!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Erin Go Bragh!

Irish Trivia

March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, named in honor of the patron saint of Ireland. It’s not known whether March 17 is the date of St. Patrick’s birth or death. Some claim it’s both; others claim it’s neither.

It’s alleged that St. Brendan, a 5th century sailor, discovered America before Christopher Columbus ever set foot on the shores.

The shamrock was popularized by St. Patrick as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Each year, several million shamrock plants are grown in County Cork and exported around the world for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

“Erin Go Bragh” means “Ireland Forever.”

Insight from the Irish

Cheerfulness is a sign of wisdom.

Be kind to those you meet as you rise; you may see them again as you fall.

Don’t break your shin on a stool that’s not in your way.

A best friend is like a four-leaf clover — hard to find but lucky to have.

A Wish for Our Readers

May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow
And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

Happy St. Pat’s!
