C'mon, get happy!

Have you ever tried to take the weekend off? It sounds amazing. You can lie in bed all day, eating gummy bears and doing crossword puzzles. You can let the phone ring through to voicemail and not even bother to check your call log. You can change out of your comfy pajamas into another, fresh pair of even more comfy pajamas. It’s tempting. It sounds perfect. It’s the stuff that workweek daydreams are made of.

But have you ever found yourself cleaning out your closet when you were supposed to be relaxing? Have you felt your legs twitch restlessly as you tried to nap? Have you found yourself taking a shower and changing from your clean pajamas into jeans and a tee at 9 p.m., just because you needed to feel less like a whale who’s beached itself upon your Lay-Z-Boy recliner?

What we believe will relax us often isn’t the fastest path to Chilltown. Tests show that people are happiest when we are engaged in a challenging activity that seems both achievable and worth our time. We hit a high when we feel like we’re putting our talents to good use. We become engrossed. When asked to reflect back to enjoyable experiences, we’re more likely to remember our challenging but fun activities, like taking a dance class (or going on a scavenger hunt!), than we are to remember those days of bumming around the house.

When looking for a real mood boost, remember that your best treat is a challenge. Find something that engages you but that, with some effort, will give you a feeling of success. Bring friends and family with you — new activities bond people together. When you return from your time off, you’ll not just be rested, you’ll be renewed.

It’s a surefire ticket to happiness, every time.

Happily,
