The Chateau Marmont has been the site of so many celeb stories...How many secrets have we not yet heard?

What’s the fascination with Hollywood? Registration’s in full swing for our Scandalous Hollywood Hunt. We’ve been digging up our favorite old stories and finding new tidbits to share. It’s always astonishing. In this city full of dreamers and schemers, drama abounds.

It’s been that way since the first camera started to roll. We might think of Hollywood scandals as having started since the rise of the paparazzi, but the stories have always been here, roiling underneath the surface. And even the urban legends are classic. The facts are amazing; the legends are so juicy they make us just wish they were true!

In the spirit of sharing, we’re going to post some of the scandalous Hollywood tales that aren’t featured in our upcoming hunt.

  • The Sunset Tower Hotel was the home for several of Howard Hughes’s girlfriends as well as The Duke. That’s right, John Wayne rented the penthouse and according to urban legend he kept a live cow on his balcony for fresh milk.
  • Harry Cohn, founder of Columbia Pictures, told up-and-coming heartthrob William Holden “If you’re going to get into trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont.” The hotel has a reputation for keeping mum about the wild pass-times of its patrons. Famous couples who canoodled at the Chateau include Jean Harlow and Clark Gable; Johnny Depp and Winona Rider; Johnny Depp and Kate Moss; and Howard Hughes and Mitzi Gaynor. John Bellushi died of a heroin overdose at this location, and F. Scott Fitzgerald suffered his fatal heart attack under this roof (though he died while buying cigarettes across the street). But one thing you won’t see here: paparazzi!

Fatty Arbuckle, silent movie star considered second only to Charlie Chaplain in talent, stood trial three times for manslaughter after starlet Virginia Rappe fell ill and died after one of his parties. The rumors were rampant, alleging misconduct on Arbuckle’s part that was in no way substantiated by fact. The first two trials, swayed by the salacious rumors, ended in hung juries; the third trial acquitted him of any wrongdoing.

Historic celebrity hot spot the Brown Derby might be credited with interrupting our dinners with telephone calls. The restaurant installed telephones at the tables so that business didn’t have to stop just because their meal started!
