Ah, Venice. There’s always something new, whether it’s the artwork being sold on beach blankets beside the boardwalk or the performers break-dancing, sword swallowing or singing into their portable microphones. This last week, we spent a few days in Venice Beach, working up a hunt for a private client. As always, it turned our work into a day at the beach! The free-flowing ease of Venice is at the neighborhood’s heart. Developed in the early 1900s to be a beach getaway, it’s adopted that beachy freedom as part of its permanent vibe. An epicenter for writers, artists and musicians, Venice’s creativity has influenced not only Los Angeles but the whole world. Here’s some Venice-inspired trivia to bring the beach to you!
Surfing developed in Hawaii in the late 19th century. It came to the Cali coast in the 1920s and reached great popularity with American you in the 1960s. The surfing sub-culture is known for its free, chilled-out attitude.
The skateboard was invented in 1965 as a way for surfers to keep surfing, even when there weren’t any waves to ride. It was even originally called “sidewalk surfing!” More than half the skateboarders in the U.S. live in California.
In the 1950s, Beat culture found a ready home in Venice. Check out work from Stuart Perkoff, John Thomas, Frank T. Rios and Tony Scibella and you just might get a sense of Venice!
Modeled after Venice, Italy, it’s a great place to find a slice of pizza. Or a burger. Or fish tacos.
Hope we see you on the Boardwalk!
