Our Facebook feed is full up of fans listing things they’re grateful for every day until Thanksgiving. As internet trends go, this is a wonderful one.
According to WebMD’s article “Boost Your Health with a Dose of Gratitude,” those who live life in a grateful mindset report fewer stress-related illnesses. They are also more likely to feel optimistic and satisfied with their lives than those who do not. Sometimes, gratitude stems from a change of perspective. It’s easy to take the roof above us for granted — until it’s raining. And we might lose sight of our co-workers’ special talents until they’re out sick for a while or are taking family leave. We might even take our own skills for granted until we’re given a new way to apply them.
The most effective way to be grateful is to be mindful. When you see a good reason to give a compliment, give one. When you’re content or enjoying yourself, take notice and tell people. Moods are contagious — you might just pass that gratitude along.
Find ways to switch your perspective. Take your family or team on a scavenger hunt and see them in action, doing an activity out of the norm. Structure your compliments so that they focus on the other person; rather than saying “I like your shirt,” where the focus is on you and your opinion, find another true statement that centers on them, like “You look good in blue,” or “You know how to dress well.” That kind of recognition goes a long way toward building bonds.
And finally, we would like to say thanks to YOU — for reading our blogs, for sharing them, for joining us on scavenger hunts, for making Out of the Box Events the joy it is.
Attitude of Gratitude Quotes:
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” — Winston Churchill
“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” —Roald Dahl
“I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” — Abraham Lincoln
“When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.” —Willie Nelson
