“Out of the Box” Holiday Traditions! December 13, 2011    3:45 pm

This nice witch wants to bring you presents. Thank you, La Befana!

There are lots of ways to celebrate the holidays. Here at Out of the Box Events, we’re hosting two more weekends of the Silver Bells and Golden Gossip Scavenger Hunt on Rodeo Drive, Dec. 17 and 24, as well as pumping holiday music 24-7 and overdosing on candy canes as we prep for our private holiday party hunts. But what do people do outside the blissful grounds of Los Angeles? What puts them in the holiday spirit?

Here’s a sample of unique holiday traditions from around the world.

In Japan, the traditional Christmas dinner is a family meal from KFC. In the 1970s, KFC ran such a successful holiday advertising campaign that they became embedded in the Japanese holiday observance. We think this tradition is all that and a bucket of chicken!

In Italy, Santa doesn’t bring presents. La Befana, a nice witch, brings them. Seems just as likely that a witch would bring goodies as a jolly man with a roomful of elfin toymakers, don’t you think?

In Catalonia, a region of Spain, no nativity set is complete without the Caganer, a small figure of a man pooping. No one’s entirely sure why the Caganer came to be, although he can be traced back to the 18th century. One theory is that he symbolizes that all people are equal because, to quote the children’s book, “Everybody poops.”

A Danish New Year’s tradition is throwing breakable dishes at a neighbor’s door for luck. The family with the most broken dishes out front is the luckiest one because it means that their friends care about them. (Even if they have a funny way of showing it.)

Happy holidays!
