What makes a great band? It’s more than killer hooks or a catchy chorus. Even a phenomenal lead singer or a genius guitarist won’t make it in the music world without a solid band surrounding them. A great band exemplifies one of Out of the Box Events’ key words: teamwork. Without teamwork, bandmates are just a bunch of musicians, scrambling for the limelight.

Let’s consider the solo.  A solo is when a single musician plays his or her instrument while all the other musicians fall silent. Does this sound like teamwork to you?  No?

It might seem as though that single musician is standing along when he or she takes the solo, but that moment is actually a great example of teamwork and trust. For a passage of the song, all the other bandmates are ceding control to the soloist. They are letting him/her shine. Although they are not directly participating in the solo, they are clearing the way for the soloist to get credit for his/her talent and expertise.  And when the solo is complete, the rest of the band is there to kick back in and contribute their talents to the band’s trademark sound.

Think about your own teams and families. Diversity within your group adds to its strength. No band needs five guitarists; it needs guitar and drum and bass and maybe someone on the triangle. To each their own specialty.

The best teams, like the best bands, know when to trust each other to take the lead. Play the solo. Show off their riffs. Give and take. It’s fundamental to making the best kind of music — yours.

Does your team or family know when to let each other shine?
